So you've finally soaked up a bit of theory about how to make money online, and you have decided the way to go is to start your own affiliate marketing business. Congratulations!
Affiliate marketing is the best way to learn how to earn money online for a variety of reasons. Most importantly, you can work with established products and marketing resources, without spending a ton of time and money coming up with them on your own.
This is a good way to learn all the vital lessons of internet marketing, without risking losing your shirt in the process. And this is why many people start out with affiliate marketing. But one thing they neglect to do is pick their niche properly. Here are three things to keep in mind for your first money-making efforts.
1. Go with what you know. Eventually you may want to venture into new and profitable territory that you don't yet know much about. And that's fine--even good!
But if you're already starting out cold with internet marketing, it's best to at least not start cold with your niche! You'll still want to do a bit of research on your niche, of course.
Be sure and check Google news and blogs to see the latest developments, and to see what's being talked about in your niche. Check Technorati and Google blog search for what people say about your niche. And don't forget forums, where you can see what kinds of problems people have in your niche--problems you can sell them the answers for!
But since you're already going to be on a learning curve with internet marketing, you shouldn't add to your mental stress by starting an online business in an area you don't know much about. Start out with what you already know. If that turns out not to be profitable enough, you can always move on to greener fields once you've learned a little.
2. Go with what you love--or at least like. The learning curve principle applies here, too. In this case, it doesn't apply to learning so much as just staying interested.
You're going to spend more time setting up shop in your first niche market than in any later one. This is just because it always takes more time to learn how to do something right the first time than on subsequent occasions.
And this is exactly why you should go with something you love--or at least like. If you go with something you hate but that makes money, or with something that just plain bores you, it's going to be harder for you to keep putting in the necessary hours to get over that learning curve.
Make things easy on yourself, and start off in a niche that you love!
3. Go with what can be monetized. Last but not least, you need to make sure people in your niche actually buy the products you can sell! This may sound like a big "duh," but many people who start an affiliate marketing business don't seem to consider this factor.
Fortunately, most of us have enough interests to support seven to 10 niches, right off the bat. That should be enough to find one that is profitable for you!
